The Life of Mary Slessor

Summary - Life of Mary Slessor
by Jasmine Tran

Would you like to be a missionary?  If so, you could follow in the footsteps of Mary Slessor, a famous Scottish missionary.  She was born on December 2, 1848 in Aberdeen, Scotland.  Mary had an alcoholic father and a Christian mother.  Her family sent her to a mill to earn some money, but Mary was not happy with this ordeal.  She thought the only thing bearable was that she got to go to school at the mill.  When Mary learned to read, she mostly read about David Livingstone, the well-known Scottish missionary.  Her brother, who planned to go to Calabar, West Africa as a missionary, invited her to go along as his assistant.  Unfortunately, Mary’s brother died, so the chance was stripped clear.  One day an old woman invited her and some girls to her house.  The old woman told them if they didn’t believe in Christ, they would spend an eternity in Hell without him.  Mary was so shocked about this that she came to realize that she needed Jesus.  She became a Christian soon after.  Mary thought that she had to go to Africa as a missionary, and she was right.  She set off to Africa, met some other missionaries, and was assigned to Old Town.  Mary influenced the people there, persuading them to change their customs of killing people.  After her second furlough, she was convinced to go to the Okoyong, a place where no missionary has ever gone before.  Friends in Old Town told her not to go, but it was no use.  Surprisingly, not only did Mary stay safe, she ministered powerfully among the Okoyong people.  Her works were so powerful that other tribes sought out her help, and the British even gave Mary a special rank.  At one point, she fell in love with a young man, but when they asked to marry, the Mission Board refused.  Later, Mary asked the Board if she could leave Okoyong and go preach to the fiercest cannibals.  She moved to the Aros clan in 1904 and taught them the Good News.  In 1905, Mary died at the age of 66.  In places where she had preached, the joy of Christ spread through those who had believed in just one missionary: Mary Slessor.

Poem for my Cooking Teacher

I wanted to say thank you to my wonderful cooking instructor, so I wrote a quick poem for her to go along w/ the herbs I picked from our garden.  I presented her with a bouquet of herbs and a poem.
